French language and culture - a lifetime passion!

I started learning French 30 years ago, and have never stopped! I have had the joy of two study-abroad experiences at the University of Paris. In addition to a Bachelor's Degree in French, I have continued my studies with courses on French translation, French for business, and the history of French cooking! I keep my skills current by reading extensively in French and watching French movies and TV. When we're not in a pandemic, France is my favorite travel destination!

3 years of private tutor to Primary and Secondary

I'm a Full Time Mechanical Engineer with 3+ years experience at a Fortune 500 Oil and Gas Company. Helping students understand the fundamentals of Mathematics is my number one priority. In College, I worked as a Student Engineer, tutored my peers, tutored groups of people, and designed (and implemented) specifically tailored tutoring sessions for student with unique cases. I not only help students overcome their obstacles, I enrich them with a solid foundation that reaches the root of their obstacles, and facilitates problem solving skills that empower students to think through problems. A lot of students have the mindset that mathematics is too hard, and can never get around that mindset. I used to be like that when I was a lot younger before high school until a tutor broke down the concept to me. Mathematics can be fun and easy, and that is what I want to help students understand.

Experienced Math Tutor

I have had about two years of experience in tutoring kids of many grade levels at local after-school programs. Although I enjoy various school subjects, math is my favorite because of my love of numbers. Moreover, I get a thrill out of applying problems involving math and numbers to the real world and students' real-life experiences. For example, I figured that several middle school students at one of the organizations I worked for, the Japanese Community Youth Council, enjoyed playing video games, so I occasionally incorporated those into my demonstrations and examples. Additionally, I often worked with students in groups of two to four, and this encouraged collaboration among them. Consequently, the students’ grades increased by at least 25%. Furthermore, towards the close of the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years, the organization rewarded me for my contributions with certificates of recognition. At another program, 826 Valencia, I tutored kids ages 6-16 during the fall 2015 semester, providing another opportunity to engage and collaborate with students. For example, one student needed help with problems related to linear equations. The assignment contained the term “Figure 0”, the latter of which seemed foreign to me. But after I recalled terminology in my high school math classes, both of us were able to determine that Figure 0 was its y-intercept. Overall, I felt proud that I could help a student simplify a challenging concept.
